A new program is hoping to equip youngsters with tree saplings instead of candy bars for door-to-door school fundraisers.
The Teenage Tree Program – a joint initiative by Return the Landscape, Maajiigin Gumig greenhouse, the Hub, and the Unitarian Fellowship of Sarnia and Port Huron – began months ago, with Hub users helping collect seeds and growing the saplings at the Aamjiwnaang First Nation greenhouse, said Return the Landscape’s Shawn McKnight.
Those saplings they’re helping care for will be ready in about a year’s time to be sold wholesale to schools, so schools and students can sell them in turn to fundraise for field trips, sports teams and other initiatives, he said.
“I’m kind of looking at it as a generational project where we’re going to be reforesting our community with our youth as the leads,” McKnight said.
