125th Commemoration Celebration June 17-22, 2024

1 February 2024

Good day, it is with great excitement that we bring this news to your attention. Our Nations are planning a celebration to commemorate the signing of Treaty No. 8 (1899). It has been 125 years since this historic event took place between the settlers and our ancestors.

On June 21, 1899, the eighth treaty between the Indians of North America and the Queen of England was signed. The signatories of Treaty 8 agreed to its terms for reasons of peace and friendship — ensuring what they thought would be a partnership.

We have planned activities for the week of June 21, 2024 and have invited representatives from all sectors to join us for this celebration, as we are all Treaty partners. The activities will kick off with a wagon trail Grand Entry on Monday June 17, 2024 Into Willow Point, where the Treaty was signed in 1899, and carry on throughout the week until Friday June 21, 2024 with a closing ceremony.

It is our hope that you can join us for this milestone commemoration. We invite you to come observe and learn about the sovereignty our Nations hold, how that relationship was created and evolved, and where it is at today. Most of all, we invite you to come enjoy the celebration activities. Some of you might recall the 100th anniversary celebration in 1999, held in Grouard, where the re-enactment of the signing took place between Chiefs of Treaty 8 and Government Officials. It was a huge event that was successful in renewing relations, creating awareness, and honouring the past and present leaders that play vital roles in upholding the Treaty agreement.

The success of hosting events of this magnitude cannot happen without support from our partners, such as you. We are respectfully requesting any contributions you may have to offer towards the celebration. Please feel free to reach out to one of us to discuss further.
