About this event
The FIRE Indigenous Spotlight Series, funded by the Cultural Heritage Initiatives Program and Edmonton Heritage Council (EHC), aims to provide unique opportunities for urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to learn from and build relationships with Indigenous thought leaders, researchers, storytellers and Knowledge Holders.
This six-part series, celebrates the significant and ongoing efforts of Indigenous peoples in preservation and resurgence of their own traditional and contemporary cultures, sciences, languages, histories, and stories within Treaty 6 Territory and what is today known as Alberta.

Indigenous Fire Ecology and Cultural Burning

Join us for a land based field trip where Keara will showcase her current research that focuses on collaborating with Indigenous communities to apply mapping technologies and cultural burning practices for the mitigation of wildfire risk.
There are two time slots for this session with transportation to and from Elk Island Park. Childcare is available upon request for the early afternoon session on August 14th.
ABOUT OUR PRESENTER
Keara Lightning is a member of the Samson Cree Nation and a PhD student in the Department of Renewable Resources at the University of Alberta.

Indigitization – Tools for Digitizing and Sustaining Indigenous Knowledge

Join us for an insightful presentation on the conservation, digitization, and management of Indigenous knowledge, oral stories, and heritage! In partnership with the Edmonton Public Library (EPL), we are excited to welcome our keynote presenter, Gerry Lawson from the Oral History and Language Lab at the Museum of Anthropology. Gerry will provide an in-depth look at the Indigitization toolkit and showcase examples of community-led digitization projects.
Indigitization aims to develop a network of practitioners who support the community-led management of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit digital heritage. This event is a unique opportunity to learn about preserving Indigenous cultural heritage through innovative digital methods and to connect with experts in the field!

ABOUT OUR PRESENTER
Gerry Lawson is a member of the Heiltsuk First Nation and manages the Oral History and Language Lab at the UBC Museum of Anthropology.As the Technology Lead for the Indigitization Program, Gerry oversees all technical skills-based programing.
