First Nations Community Governance III – Nation Building

This workshop is intended for First Nations leaders and senior Administration working in First Nations. It is designed to provide an effective overview of nation building; self-governance approach and building sustainable, self-determined economies; strong institutions; culture and history; and capacity development. The workshop will introduce you to the best practices used in successful nation building through the fostering of strong institutions, economies, capacity, relationships, and the use of culture and language as an integral part of the operations of Chief and Council, the administration and the community.

Workshop Learning Objectives:

OBJECTIVE 1        Explain the historical context for traditional and contemporary governance including elements of the Constitution Act, 1982.

OBJECTIVE 2        Understand the relevant Treaty making, Treaty implementation, self-government, and land claim settlement processes.

OBJECTIVE 3        Apply the knowledge of and ability to enhance First Nations values, cultures, traditions, languages and worldviews and apply them in the operations of the Chief and Council, Council Administration and community.

OBJECTIVE 4        Understand the process to strengthen your community (nation building approach) and to create sustainable, self-determined economies.

OBJECTIVE 5        Foster a nation building/self-government approach and building sustainable, self-determined economies.
