About this event

The Global Summit on Ending Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Refugee and Humanitarian Crises

Date: December 13 -14, 2024

Venue: 163 Queen St E 1st floor, Toronto, ON M5A 1S1, Canada

“Empowering Survivors, Building Resilient Communities”

1. Introduction

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) remains a significant concern in refugee and humanitarian crises. It is estimated that one in three women worldwide will experience sexual or physical violence in their lifetime, with even higher numbers in refugee and humanitarian crises. SGBV is a serious violation of human rights and a life-threatening health and protection issue. When people flee their homes, they are often at greater risk of physical, sexual, and psychological violence, including rape, sexual abuse, trafficking, and forced prostitution.

2. Background

Gender-based violence continues to disproportionately impact women and girls due to deep-rooted gender inequalities in our societies. These inequalities are amplified in crisis situations, creating fertile ground for exploitation and abuse. SGBV undermines the well-being of individuals, families, and communities, leading to physical and mental health problems, social isolation, economic insecurity, and reduced participation in public life. The global economy is also significantly impacted, with the World Bank estimating that GBV costs $1.5 trillion annually.

3. Purpose of the Summit

The Global Summit on Ending Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Refugee and Humanitarian Crises is the first global gathering and groundbreaking initiative led by grassroots women and refugee-led organizations. It aims to bring together SGBV survivors, experts, advocates, policymakers, and stakeholders from Canada and around the world to address SGBV, one of the most pervasive and prevalent issue facing refugees, displaced persons, and asylum seekers today.

By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the Summit seeks to foster a collaborative and inclusive approach to ending SGBV and empowering survivors to build resilience and create a safer, more equitable future for all.
