About this event
Jill Heinerth is a world-renowned underwater explorer, Canadian Geographic travel ambassador, and the first Explorer-in-Residence of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS). Dr. Marc St-Onge is senior emeritus scientist at the Geological Survey of Canada. Both have travelled and explored extensively in the Canadian Arctic. Their perspectives— from beneath the land and beneath the surface of the Arctic Ocean—are as unique as they are informative. Host and moderator Jason Edmonds is a director and expedition leader at Adventure Canada, a Fellow of the RCGS, a recent recipient of the Martin Bergmann Award for Excellence in Arctic Leadership, and the only Inuk expedition leader in the expedition cruise industry.
Using geological evidence unique to the Canadian Arctic, Marc will tell the compelling story of Earth’s history—from the cooling of the early molten Earth to primitive bacteria oxygenating the oceans and atmosphere, to the fossil record of multicellular organisms enabling Victorians to establish the fundamental principles of geology. Jill, with rich images, audio, and video, will share her experience and observations from beneath the frozen ice (also a mineral) of the Arctic Ocean. With links to the deep past and the far future, the frozen seas of the North offer a perspective on the changing world that is at once mesmerizing, beautiful, troubling and—maybe—promising.
