Otinichik : Taken emerges as an innovative collaboration of Sixties Scoop Network, Truth and Reconcilliation Committee of the Métis Nation of Alberta, Île à la Crosse Boarding School in Saskatchewan and Canadian portrait artist Lynn Melbourne, whose work captures the spirit of the children who are survivors of the legacy of forced removal of Indigenous children from their families and the persisting harms of foster.
The purpose of this project is to:
- honour children who were taken and provide support to them and their families;
- provide an opportunity for survivors, families, and communities to share their stories and advance inter-generational healing and reconciliation;
- support calls for action with more investigating, truth telling and the development of new policies;
- increase awareness of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the history and legacy of Residential Schools, the sixties scoop and the continued removal of children from their families and communities.
