Indigenous Community Based Research – Things I’ve Learned

Indigenous Community Based Research – Things I’ve Learned Date and time Thursday, January 16, 2025 · 1 - 2pm EST Location Centre for Research and Innovation at Durham College (CIR209) 2000 Simcoe Street North Oshawa, ON L1G 0C5 Canada

About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour
An overview of important lessons learned in the journey of Indigenous research methodologies and community based research initiatives. About our Guest Speaker: Kandace Bond Wileman (BA Hons, LLB) is a professor and Paralegal Program Coordinator in the Faculty of Social and Community Services at Durham College. Before teaching, Kandace practised poverty law at legal clinics in Ontario and acted as review counsel for a student legal clinic established at Durham College, the first of its kind in the province. Kandace obtained her undergraduate degree in political science and history (double major) from York University. She studied law both abroad (University of Leicester, UK) and at home in Ontario (University of Windsor). Kandace is currently pursing her Masters of Laws (LLM) through the University of Londong (UK). Kandace has published about tribunal practice and procedure and the importance of citation in legal writing. Kandace's largest passion is her ongoing education about Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Kandace is not Indigenous, but is of settler-colonial heritage stemming from England, Scotland, and Belgium. Kandace is burdened by the unaddressed Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action in addition to the host of injustices suffered by Canadian Indigenous communities. Reconciliation and Repair: Treaty, Covenant, Relationship, Bond

Reconciliation and Repair: Treaty, Covenant, Relationship, Bond Date and time Thursday, January 16, 2025 · 6:30 - 8pm MST Location The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland 750 9 Avenue Southeast Calgary, AB T2G 5E1 Canada

About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes
The University of Calgary Chair of Christian Thought Lebel Lecture in Christian Ethics Christian communities engaged in the work of reconciliation seek to repair relationships and histories often neglected, buried, and considered shameful to the society at large. A retelling of this history necessitates a coming to terms with who we were then and who we are now, and all that our past has constructed to enable the enjoyment we see today. It is the work of inculturation and diaspora that show us the limits of who we can be as we delve into the intergenerational work of reconciliation, not only with Indigenous populations, but through our efforts globally as we stand as a people of peace. Scripture and history give us a context, but how we understand and develop our reconciliation social models is the critical enterprise we have committed to engage with and nurture in the years ahead. It is this relational reconciliation model that attends to our work within the Christian community and beyond. Rev. Tony Snow (BA, MDiv) is a member of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation and serves as the Indigenous Minister for the Chinook Winds Region (southern Alberta) of the United Church of Canada. In this role, he oversees programs for relationship-building, outreach, and reconciliation across denominational, ecumenical, and interfaith communities. An intergenerational clergy representative from the Stoney people, Rev. Snow works alongside his brother, Rev. John Snow, and his sister, Student Minister Gloria Snow, continuing the legacy of their father, the late Dr. Rev. Chief John Snow Sr. Together, they are dedicated to honoring and living out the treaty relationship and our shared covenants. Rev. Snow is also a descendant of the signers of Treaty 7 in southern Alberta and a respected traditional knowledge keeper. This Year’s Chair of Christian Thought Lebel Lecture in Christian Ethics is organized in partnership with CIH.
