Under the direction of the Director of Operations, the Cleaner is responsible for ensuring the safe and effective cleaning of Ontario Native Women’s Association and its premises within the City of Thunder Bay.

The Cleaner will be responsible for keeping the building in a clean, and orderly condition at, all times. They will perform heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning floors, shampooing rugs, washing walls, windows and glass, and removing rubbish as required. They will ensure all Occupational Health and Safety Codes are adhered to in an effort, to maintain a healthy, safe, and professional working environment.


  • Grade 12 or GED along with 1-2 years of proven experience as a custodian, janitor or in a similar role
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Extensive experience with standard cleaning methods and procedures, including safe disposal of chemicals and other hazardous materials.
  • Thoroughly versed in WHMIS including WHMIS labels and MSDS
  • Knowledge of COVID -19 cleaning standards and able to clean high traffic areas frequently.
  • Experience in the use and maintenance of cleaning equipment and appliances.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for many hours and perform repetitive motion for periods of time.
  • Ability to set up and maintain the three R’s (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse) along with composting station.
  • Order all cleaning supplies as needed and maintain an adequate inventory.
  • Maintain schedule for garbage dumpsters to ensure they are emptied on a regular basis.
  • Works in collaboration with the Joint Health and Safety Committee
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, etc.) and email
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage time effectively.
  • Reliable vehicle, appropriate vehicle insurance coverage and valid Ontario “G” class driver’s license.
  • Current, valid vulnerable sector criminal records check, reliable cellphone.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous Language is considered an asset.

  • She is Wise Leadership Informed – Understands to incorporate the Four Agreements within daily responsibilities and combined with ONWA’s cultural teachings contribute to the empowerment and leadership of Indigenous women within their communities.


  1. Responsible for ensuring facilities are clean and in orderly condition daily.
  2. Responsible for ensuring all COVID-19 guidelines are adhered to and followed.
  3. Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and vacuums floors daily.
  4. Gathers and empties trash and recycling and dispose of in proper location.
  5. Scrubs, sanitizes, and supplies restroom facilities.
  6. Dusts furniture, walls, and equipment in common areas and individual office areas
  7. Cleans windows, mirrors, and partitions with soap and other cleansers.
  8. Re-stock materials like toilet paper, sanitizer, soap, and hand towels in the washrooms and ensures an adequate supply is maintained.
  9. Ensures the kitchens are cleaned daily, fridges and freezers maintained, cupboards cleaned, and all kitchen equipment maintained as per occupational health and safety standards.
  10. Implement annual cleaning of uncommon areas such as baseboards, walls, closets etc.
  11. Ensure all cleaning materials and equipment are maintained and ordered as needed.
  12. Ensure assigned cleaning tasks are executed in a timely and orderly manner.
  13. Work as part of a team to execute cleaning duties and to make sure that standards (of neatness/cleanliness) are maintained.
  14. Make reports to supervisor concerning repairs that have, to be made (which have been noticed while carrying out daily duties)
  15. Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power machinery to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
  16. Cleans and polishes fixtures and furniture.
  17. Shampoos or steam-cleans carpets, rugs and other upholstered surfaces.
  18. Manages inventory of cleaning supplies.
  19. Maintains the 3R’s and Composting on site.
  20. Other duties as assigned.


  1. Complete daily cleaning report
  2. Log and report any defects in facility to the Director of Operations.
  3. Maintain current record of all MSDS sheets on all cleaning products and chemical used for the ONWA offices.
