ONWA MANDATE

The Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA) is a not for profit organization that empowers and supports Indigenous women and their families in the province of Ontario.

ONWA encourages the participation of Indigenous women in the development of Federal, Provincial, Municipal/Local government policies that impact their lives and ensure issues affecting Indigenous women and their families are heard at key government tables.

Ending violence against Indigenous women and their families and ensuring equal access to justice, education, health, environmental stewardship and economic development, sits at the cornerstone of the organization. SCOPE:

The Indigenous Women’s Health Program Coordinator will coach, train, and support a group of employees within their program while ensuring ONWA’s vision, mandate, objectives and community member deliverables are met. The Indigenous Women’s Health Program Coordinator is responsible to develop, deliver and facilitate programming within the Indigenous Women’s Health Program as assigned by the Manager of Community Development. The Indigenous Women’s Health Program Coordinator will oversee the delivery of the assigned programs, sites, and services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A post secondary diploma/degree and a minimum of 5 years work experience in the area of health and diabetes.
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous women’s health and experiences with diabetes health.
  • Demonstrated excellent administrative and coordination duties.
  • Knowledge of Not-For Profit Organizations Program Delivery.
  • Must be dependable, able to follow instructions, respond to management direction and be able to improve performance through management feedback.
  • Capacity to solve problems and to see different perspectives.
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage time effectively.
  • Highly motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership and communication skills and an ability to follow through on assigned duties independently with strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of issues affecting and providing services to Indigenous women, their families and their communities and awareness of available community resources.
  • Experience coordinating workshops and/or conferences.
  • Experience with resource development and implementation.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and to work flexible hours.
  • Proven ability to build trusting relationships at all levels and across all functions.
  • Decision making skills to set standards and priorities and allocate time and resources.
  • Ability to prioritize program deliverables and activities within budget and time considerations.
  • Proficient working knowledge of MS Office Software, internet, and general office equipment.
  • Reliable vehicle, appropriate vehicle insurance coverage with 2,000,000 liability and valid Ontario “G” class driver’s license.
  • Current, valid vulnerable sector criminal records check. Valid First Aid/CPR.
  • A cellular phone and internet access are required within this position.
  • Must be willing and able to work a flexible working from home arrangement if required. This may include a combination of virtual remote work in your home and in office arrangements. This will be based on operational needs and will be determined by ONWA.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Culture and Trauma informed practices.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous Language is considered an asset.

  • Indigenous Gender-Based Analysis Informed – Understands to incorporate an intersectional approach to gender, race and discrimination and subsequent intergenerational impacts affecting Indigenous women and their families.
  • Trauma-Based Practice Informed – Understands to incorporate a trauma-informed approach to recognize and respond to all forms of trauma and the necessity of supporting Indigenous women in a culture of tradition and safety in her healing journey.
  • She is Wise Leadership Informed – Understands to incorporate the Four Agreements within daily responsibilities and combined with ONWA’s cultural teachings contribute to the empowerment and leadership of Indigenous women within their communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES – SPECIFIC:

  • Overall planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of activities to successfully fulfill Ministry of Health and Long-term Care’s Indigenous Diabetes Initiative Contribution Agreement.
  • Establish priorities, develop, and manage a yearly workplan and budget that aligns with Ministry expectations and guidelines.
  • Ensure deadlines are met and procedures followed, conduct program evaluation, and prepare reports required to meet the deliverables outlined in the contribution agreement.
  • Ensure indigenous women living with diabetes have equitable access to a Diabetes Education Program regardless of who they are or where they live in Ontario.
  • Create new and update existing presentations to maintain current information.
  • Consult with health groups and individuals living with diabetes regarding program development and needs.
  • health policies to make them suitable for Indigenous women and their family’s needs.
  • Design and provide for community assessments, knowledge, attitudes and behavior studies and other necessary planning tools required to assess needs regarding health promotion and diabetes.
  • Measure and work to impact indicators of equitable diabetes.
  • Track and use clinical health information (annual chart audits/quality audits) and community member feedback to improve the effectiveness of the services provided.
  • Set up and supervise site offices, as well as provide orientation, training, leadership, and ongoing professional development and support to the Indigenous Women’s Health program workers.
  • Develop, review, evaluate and implement program manuals, orientation/training programs, resources, screening and assessment tools, programming, processes and procedures.
  • Provide direct, ongoing assistance to the Indigenous Women’s Health Program Worker’s to increase and maintain capacity and competence in service delivery, program administration and reporting.
  • Design and finalize data collection, reporting and accountability processes including a performance measurement plan, assemble data and prepare reports, manuals, and correspondence.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and evaluate the overall operation of the program.
  • Report to and collaborate with the ONWA Management team to successfully implement programs.
  • Collaborate with counterpart organizations at the provincial level to build evidence-based programming.
  • Develop ethics and confidentiality expectations for the program, including consent forms and a code of conduct.
  • Carry out administrative activities associated with the position.
  • All other duties as assigned.

RESPONSIBLITIES – PROGRAM COMPONENTS AND ACTIVITIES:

  1. To develop a regional plan that will decrease cross-generational incidence of type 2 diabetes by addressing the unique needs of Indigenous people and the diverse circumstances of Ontario’s Indigenous communities.
  2. To improve coordination and increase the availability of diabetes programs and services in communities. Diabetes programs and services may include but are not limited to Diabetes screening, health promotion activities (i.e. Healthy eating classes, physical activity sessions etc.), Diabetes education workshop, foot care screening and services.
  3. To develop a regional plan to support and coordinate training and development opportunities for Diabetes workers in the communities.
  4. To participate in provincial working groups with other regions/PTO’s and Diabetes partners on
    1. Planning and Coordination
    2. Tools, Resources, and Best Practices
    3. Culturally Safe Education/ Training Strategy
    4. Evaluation of Diabetes programs
  5. To participate in provincial knowledge exchange activities with other regions and Diabetes partners on Planning and Coordination, Tools, Resources, and Best Practices, Culturally Safe Education/ Training Strategy, Evaluation of Diabetes programs.
  6. Establish holistic, community based indigenous specific diabetes program and services that provides quality education programs to promote good health and well being and prevent incidence and complications.
  7. Support and Coordinate collaborations and partnerships in Indigenous diabetes policy and research to enhance Ontario’s capacity to deliver comprehensive wholistic programs and services for Indigenous women and theircommunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES – ADMINISTRATIVE:

  1. Complete monthly reports and submit to supervisor when required.
  2. Complete quarterly reports on or before the requested due date.
  3. Complete reports to funders as required.
  4. Complete and attend supervisions on a regular basis.
  5. Other reports or admin as assigned.

RESPONSIBILITIES – PUBLIC RELATIONS:

  1. Promote the program within the community.
  2. To adhere to professionalism when representing the organization at all times and maintain good communications.

EXPECTED STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:

  1. Adhere to the policies and procedures as set by the ONWA.
  2. Representation on committees when endorsed by the senior management team as required for the enhancement and benefits of ONWA’s programs.
  3. To network and promote ONWA and all ONWA related programs. Maintain good communication and professionalism at all times.
  4. Attendance and conduct at work according to the requirements of the association’s personnel policy.
  5. Adherence to the Code of Ethics, and positive relationship building.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

 The Indigenous Women’s Health Program Coordinator will be directly accountable to the Manager of Community Development for the proper completion of the functions outlined in the job description.
