The Southern Chiefs’ Organization (SCO) requires a Jordan’s Principle Coordinator to support First Nation children and families attending schools within the Louis Riel School Division.


SCO is a growing and dynamic regional Indigenous organization that represents 34 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 83,000 citizens in southern Manitoba.  SCO was established 23 years ago by the Chiefs as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.

Jordan’s Principle is named in memory of Jordan River Anderson, a young boy from Norway House Cree Nation. Jordan’s Principle is a child first initiative intended to ensure that First Nation children do not experience denials, delays, or disruptions of public services ordinarily available to other children due to jurisdictional disputes. The goal of the initiative is to connect First Nation children and their families with quality services, supports, and resources to achieve holistic outcomes.

The SCO Jordan’s Principle Coordinator at the Louis Riel School Division is a valuable member of the SCO Team and works with educators and families at the Louis Riel School Division to access programs, services and supports to increase educational success for First Nation children. This role will ensure First Nation children and their families have access to the educational, health, and social programs and services they require. The successful candidate has knowledge of and a genuine interest in helping children and families to navigate and connect with the programs, services and supports to which they are entitled.

Utilizing a strength-based approach to build confidence, focus on solutions and engage the family, the SCO Jordan’s Principle Coordinator will work with educators and families to support First Nation children at the Louis Riel School Division.

  • Working with children, families, and educators to identify the resources needed to address gaps and ensure positive educational outcomes.
  • Assisting with the application forms or appeals process to access federal Jordan’s Principle funding for children who require educational, health or social support.
  • Providing navigation support to appropriate programs, departments and/or agencies and working with professional supports in a responsive and coordinated manner.
  • Attending school case conferencing with families as required.
  • Collaborating with appropriate service providers and/or programs, both within the Louis Riel School Division, within SCO, as well as externally, such as with:
    • First Nations community-based Jordan’s Principle Case Managers.
    • Tribal Council Service Coordinators.
    • SCO Jordan’s Principle Coordinators located at various sites across southern Manitoba
    • Jordan’s Principle staff at Indigenous Services Canada.
    • Children’s Disability Services.
    • Others.
  • Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with privacy legislation and Louis Riel School Division standards to ensure personal information is kept private, safe, and secure.
  • Connecting families with Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) through the SCO NIHB Navigator to support medical transportation, vision, dental services, prescription drugs, and medical supplies and information on eligible NIHB and benefit amounts, and how to address denials and appeals.


  • Provides Jordan’s Principle supports and services for First Nations children referred by Louis Riel School Division educators and support staff, or via self-referrals by parent and caregivers.
  • Provides consistent, comprehensive, competent, and culturally appropriate services.
  • Coordinates and shares Jordan’s Principle program information, supports application to Jordan’s Principle program to families, communities and service providers, and encourages children with unmet needs and their families to secure access to services and supports.
  • Builds and nurtures relationships across community-based programs and services, service providers, and First Nations, federal, provincial, and territorial programs, and services.
  • Ensures children and families receive high quality culturally appropriate services and supports, assists in identifying service providers to support children’s access to quality and culturally appropriate health, education, and social services, and supports across all stages and levels of care.
  • Identifies barriers to First Nation children in achieving educational success and develop a plan with educators and families to overcome barriers.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets program statistics and data for reporting purposes.
  • Adheres to SCO and Louis Riel School Division policies, procedures, and standards.  Provide services in compliance with all privacy legislation including but not limited to The Personal Health Information Act (Manitoba).


  • Post-secondary degree such as a Bachelor or Master’s in education or a degree or diploma in a related discipline such as social work or health.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the education sector.
  • Experience working with multi-sectoral partnerships within and beyond the educational services sector.
  • Knowledge of Federal, Provincial and First Nation education and health systems including traditional practices.
  • Knowledge of the impacts of colonialism, Indian Residential Schools, intergenerational trauma, and systemic racism on First Nation education and children.
  • Team player with a “families first” approach who can work collaboratively with a variety of people within complex systems.
  • Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work productively with families, colleagues, supervisors, and other internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to independently manage a wide range of tasks, often within short timelines and with precision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when developing and handling sensitive information.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to write clear, concise documents and reports with a high degree of accuracy and for a variety of audiences.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate to a variety of audiences.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to speak Anishinaabe or Dakota languages an asset.

  • Must have a valid Manitoba Driver’s License as travel will be required.
  • All successful candidates must provide proof of COVID 19 vaccination.
