Position Summary

Shuswap Lake General Hospital is looking for a Casual Laboratory Office Assistant to join their team. Apply Today!

• A current 5 Minutes Typing Test 45 wpm or greater completed within past 48 months from a recognized institution, (ON-LINE TESTS NOT ACCEPTED);
• Medical Terminology course
• Your Grade 12 Diploma;
• Your Resume indicating two years’ recent related experience, Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;

This position performs a variety of clerical duties related to the planning and processing of employee vacation and leave information and performs registration and cashier duties as required. Typical duties and responsibilities include:
• Review and processes test requisitions by reading and interpreting written or verbal instructions from physicians and completing requisition forms with appropriate patient demographics such as patients name, date of birth and specific laboratory tests required
• Receives, sorts, numbers and prepares specimens such as sputum, blood, urine, stool, etc. by entering patient demographic information and tests ordered into LIS; preparing requisitions as required; verifying specimen identification matches identification on requisition; prioritizes specimen preparation to accommodate urgent requests as required.
• Receives referred in specimens from other laboratories, enters patient demographic data and tests ordered and/or prepares requisitions as required
• Answers incoming telephone calls, Receives, opens, and re-directs incoming mail, Faxes, mails and distributes reports for the laboratory area
• Assists in maintaining established levels of required laboratory supplies by monitoring levels and notifying the supervisor when a reorder is required.
• Performs clerical functions such as recording unit values of test results
• Assists with orienting new staff
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Shift Type(s): Days

Shift Times: 09:30 to 17:30

Days Of Work: Monday to Friday

This is a Casual opportunity. Casual means there are no guaranteed hours and work requirements can vary from 0 – 37.5 hours per week.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:
Grade 12, medical terminology and two years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to keyboard at 45 wpm
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to deal with others effectively.
• Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
• Ability to organize work
• Ability to operate related equipment.
