Language & Culture Strategist: Education

The Chiefs of Ontario are welcoming applications for the role of Language & Culture Strategist. This position is responsible for policy analysis, research and strategic planning to support First Nations and First Nation organizations to reclaim, revitalize maintain and strengthen First Nation languages and cultures in Ontario as directed by the Director of Education.

LOCATION: Toronto, Ontario (During the Covid-19 office shut down, the employee will be working out of their home office)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work as a key member of a COO Education Department.
  • Conduct and oversee in-depth research, data collection, policy analysis, and environmental scanning of current and future legislation, policies and programs impacting First Nation communities and organizations in relation to language and culture.
  • Develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with associated national and regional teams, with respect for diversity, consensus-building judgment, values and ethics.
  • Regularly interface and work in conjunction with the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada to access and analyze data and information related to language and culture and develop strategic plans according to the needs of First Nations and First Nation organizations and institutions in Ontario.
  • Develop and implement accurate reporting mechanisms that measure the efficacy of previous and current programs, strategies and initiatives and inform ongoing improvements.
  • Develop and implement work and strategic plans to address priority files associated with language and culture.
  • Attend and take notes at relevant meetings and gatherings.
  • Assist in planning and successful execution of meetings and gatherings.
  • Consolidate information and develop appropriate written communications.
  • Other duties as required.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Experience in an education-related position
  • Knowledge of First Nation education issues, challenges and delivery models
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Strong communication skills with proficiency in developing written communications and the development and delivery of oral presentations
  • Fluency in at least one of the First Nation languages in Ontario is an asset
  • Experience working with a range of government and non-government stakeholders.
  • Experience conducting research, data analysis and strategic planning.
  • Experience with First Nations research methods is an asset.
