Michipicoten First Nation (MFN) is a vibrant Anishinaabe community located on the white sands (Northeast shores) of Lake Superior near Wawa Ontario. The registered population is approximately 1,400 with 70 citizens living on reserve. With a strong sense of community and cultural identity, Michipicoten First Nation strives to maintain harmony and balance with Mother Earth, neighbouring First Nations, and surrounding communities.

Michipicoten First Nation is seeking a full-time Manager, Ganaw-Zhawenjige (Child Welfare). Reporting to the Director of Operations or designate, the Manager, Ganaw-Zhawenjige (Child Welfare) will oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of all Ganaw-Zhawenjige programs offered through the department and will be responsible for the direct supervision of a growing team.  The incumbent will be guided by the MFN vision and will continue to develop MFN’s Child and Family Services model with strategic goals and objectives.  The Manager, Ganaw-Zhawenjige (Child Welfare) will execute programs and services that advocate for the best interests of children affiliated with MFN and support families involved with child welfare, both on and off reserve. A key function of the role is to ensure financial practices honour terms of accountability agreements with funders, and that MFN and departmental policies and procedures are adhered to. The Manager, Ganaw-Zhawenjige (Child Welfare) will ensure that supports and services are integrated within an Indigenous culturally competent framework and best practices model.  Flexible hours and ability to travel frequently is required. This position is located primarily in Sault Ste. Marie, with occasional remote and on-site work within Michipicoten.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Program Leadership: To support the development of MFN Ganaw-Zhawenjige strategic planning and implement goals as established by Chief and Council.
  • Program Support: To evaluate and coordinate Ganaw-Zhawenjige programs by providing supervision to staff and guidance and support to the First Nation.
  • Finance & Administration: Provide an administrative/monitoring function over Ganaw-Zhawenjige programs and service delivery, as well as the day-to-day operations of Michipicoten’s Ganaw-Zhawenjige department.
  • Interagency Participation: Actively participate in internal, external, local, and regional committees/groups to coordinate programs and services with Michipicoten First Nation.
  • Operations & Maintenance: Ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Sault Ste. Marie satellite office
  • Human Resources Management: Perform day-to-day staff management in accordance with MFN policies and performance expectations.
  • Quality Management: Ensure that all programs meet or exceed program objectives.
  • Reporting: Submit regular reports or forecasts as required, to the Director of Operations, Executive Officer, Chief and Council or other external representatives.
  • Funding: Identify funding opportunities available to this program and complete funding applications.
  • Building Relationships: Maintain excellent working relations and communications with external service partners including Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, Algoma Children’s Aid Society, Nogdawindamin Family & Child Services and other child welfare agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training

  • Minimum post-secondary degree in social work, social science, or related field
  • Successful completion of the First Nation Child Welfare Advocate (FNCWA) certificate program considered an asset.

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years working experience with a First Nation Community in the social services field
  • Minimum five (5) years in a supervisory/management role

Knowledge

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the Child, Youth & Family Services Act and the Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children, youth, and families
  • Knowledge of court proceedings involving child welfare and protection matters
  • Knowledge of case management techniques
  • Strong knowledge of Anishinaabe culture and history

Skills & Abilities

  • Able to interpret legislation, regulations, and legal documents.
  • Proven ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential subject matter.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have advanced computer skills: Microsoft 365, Outlook, Internet, Microsoft Teams
  • Strong knowledge of Anishinaabe culture and history
  • Bi-cultural competencies
  • High level of integrity and work ethic

Other

  • Must be able to work flexible hours and travel with minimal notice
  • Must provide a satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector scan (if hired).
  • Must have valid driver’s license, satisfactory driver’s abstract, and access to a reliable vehicle

TERM: Full-time, permanent

WORK LOCATION:  Sault Ste. Marie

SALARY RANGE:  $82,953 – $92,410
