Position Summary

About this exciting role:

The Manager, Physician Compensation is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the overall strategic direction of all aspects of physician compensation for all levels within Interior Health (IH).

The Manager provides expertise about physician compensation payment processes, recoveries for revenues, accounting, physician contract management, monitoring and funding for physician compensation in a complex environment with dynamic and constantly changing priorities. The Manager proposes remedial action on issues and is accountable within and around a financial framework in order to facilitate the achievement of the goals and objectives of Medical Affairs and IH.

The Manager provides input and makes recommendations to the Director, Physician Compensation on issues related to contracts management, service deliverable monitoring and compliance for physician services (clinical and administrative), payments to physicians, analysis of payments to ensure contract terms are not exceeded, revenue recoveries from various sources of funding streams, and maximization of funding streams. The Manager is an expert at resolving accounting issues, leads internal audit recommendations, manages changes of policies and provides recommendations on policy issues, and leads process management to ensure effectiveness and efficiencies are maintained at all levels of the process.

The Manager prepares and provides input to the preparation, distribution, and management of physician compensation administrative and clinical contracts.

The Manager develops strong liaisons with Finance, IMIT, Ministry of Health (MOH) Physician Compensation Branch, HEABC Physician Services, and Business Support staff in order to achieve the goals and objectives.

This position requires precision and great attention to detail despite short timelines and rapidly changing priorities. Decisions are made that impact a substantial geographic area and independent contracted physicians and staff operating across all IH sites and programs. Minimal travel is required but work hours may be unpredictable and compete with fast-changing demands for information and demands for contracts preparation. The Manager must be capable of collaborating with a variety of stakeholders and team members.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads a diversified team of multi-disciplinary professionals.
  • Maintains an integrated contract management information system including coordination of the development of efficient and effective internal control systems and processes and financial system processes to meet internal and external audit requirements and minimize financial and other organizational risks.
  • Prepares and provides input to the preparation, distribution, and management of physician compensation administrative and clinical contracts.
  • Manages contracts prepared and distributed to physicians, payments and processes for payment to physicians, recoveries from all funding sources that fund the physician contract payments, and financial and statistical contract monitoring.
  • Develops and implements accounting and reporting processes to assist in maximizing budgetary resources.
  • Prepares and analyzes regular and ad hoc reporting required by both internal and external stakeholders including utilization reports, forecasting reports, etc.
  • Ensures there is strong integration of information and issue management between the planning aspects of physician compensation and internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets all financial/statistical information related to physician compensation.
  • Monitors physician payments against contract terms and ensures terms for payment are being met.
  • Monitors contract terms with MOH to ensure that maximization of revenues is achieved and that IH operating dollars are minimized in the compensation of physician clinical services.
  • Provides guidance and expertise to the Director, Physician Compensation on issues as they relate to the strategic direction of IH.
  • Provides leadership within and around Medical Affairs in order to facilitate the achievement of the mission, goals, and objectives of the Medical Affairs department.
  • Prepares and utilizes financial reports, forecasts, and budgetary information for use in strategic decision-making around the use of scarce physician compensation resources.
  • Makes recommendations on changes and maintains policies, principles, and processes and provides input to new policies, principles, and processes for physician compensation and contract management.
  • Responsible for the selection, evaluation, development, discipline, and if necessary, termination of staff. Negotiates essential service levels.
  • Plans, approves, and implements automations to affect bargaining unit jobs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree with completed course work in Healthcare Administration and financial computer systems or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A CPA designation is required.
  • A minimum of seven to ten years of progressive management experience working in a complex, computerized environment.
