Reporting to the President, the National Director, Indigenous Strategies is a member of the Shared Services team leading the Indigenous strategy for the company in lockstep with the Senior Operations Team. In this new role, the National Director, Indigenous Strategies works to advance Indigenous awareness, strategies, partnerships, opportunities and initiatives across the company and in the construction industry.
The successful candidate will bring exceptional knowledge of Indigenous affairs, governance structures, community and business development opportunities in Canada while ensuring regular monitoring and research on evolving developments that will impact Indigenous communities and the construction industry.
Most of Chandos’ shared service functions are organized around the key principle of teaching/coaching operations leaders to do “it” as opposed to having others do “it” for them. In this way, knowledge is “operationalized” in Chandos ensuring efficiencies across the company.
- Develop strategies to increase Indigenous cultural awareness and the ability to work successfully with Indigenous communities and stakeholders.
- Develop and execute internal Indigenous awareness training programs for current and new employees.
- Identify, cultivate and build opportunities for engaging new relationships with Indigenous partners and communities of interest.
- Develop mutually advantageous relationships with development corporations, industry partners and other potential business partners.
- Work with the Business Development team to provide relevant input on Indigenous strategies, supporting proposals and presentations, and representing the company with clients as needed.
- Advance and lead the PAR certification process with the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business.
- Develop and implement methods to evaluate the impact of the company’s Indigenous strategy. Promote success stories and results to the marketing and communications team.
- Represent the company at relevant events; help create, find and promote similar advantageous partnerships and networking opportunities.
- Post-Secondary degree in business, law, engineering or related field is an asset. Equivalent education, experience and background will be considered.
- Indigenous background with excellent knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, government and leadership.
- Senior leader with experience working on an executive leadership team.
- Relationship builder with proven ability to negotiate win-win outcomes.
- Business development and/or stakeholder relations experience an asset.
- Experience supporting proposals and procurement opportunities an asset.
- Preference will be given to an Indigenous candidate.
- Cultural awareness – Understands cultural and societal nuances across Canadian Indigenous communities and regions. Embodies Chandos’ organizational values.
- Team player – Proven team player with the ability to work in a collaborative environment, with demonstrated flexibility, initiative and inclusivity.
- Action-oriented – Demonstrates an entrepreneurial approach to work that would expand and grow Indigenous business opportunities.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to balance the interests/expectations of various leaders and partners.
- Strong business and political acumen. Ability to build, navigate, and maintain lasting relationships, both internally and externally.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills that are open, honest and transparent. Negotiation and presentation abilities are essential.
