What We Do:

Children’s Treatment Network (CTN) supports over 26,000 children and youth with disabilities and other developmental needs. We provide intake, service navigation and coordinated service planning, assessment and diagnostic services, specialized clinics and rehabilitation services, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech language therapy.

What You Will Do:
CTN is looking for a temporary, full-time (contract) Senior Communication Specialist who will be responsible for executing communication plans and developing content that supports the strategic communication priorities of CTN. This role supports the manager in their oversight and content development/dissemination for CTN’s communication planning and processes, issues management, media relations, government relations activities and executive communication support and counsel. This position requires specialized knowledge on topics related to strategic communication such as media relations, executive communications and issues management. The role requires someone who can work as part of a team while demonstrating autonomous strengths in the areas of critical thinking, strategic decision making and triaging urgent, sensitive and confidential work priorities; including taking timely and immediate actions the protect and enhance the organization’s reputation in potentially high-risk/sensitive situations. Most importantly, the Senior Communication Specialist carries out their work with a deep understanding of the children, youth and families CTN serves and the partner agencies who deliver services on CTN’s behalf. This position reports to the Manager, Strategic Communication.

The successful incumbent will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

Communication Leadership, Planning and Activities

  • Lead and/or contribute to the development of communication plans independently and/or as part of a team as assigned
  • Identify, lead and/or contribute to strategic communication planning and opportunities in support of organizational priorities
  • Provide project management leadership on matters relating to strategic communication
  • Actively identifies and leads opportunities to enhance the CTN brand in high-risk/sensitive situations while managing reputational risk
  • Work directly with the manager to recommend and develop communication tactics that support internal, network and external communications
  • Ensures strategic communication tactics are aligned and in support of CTN’s strategic plan and goals
  • Support media and public relations activities as assigned
  • Liaise with external vendors as appropriate/assigned
  • Work closely with others to facilitate various communication deliverables as assigned by the manager
  • Initiate and/or support crisis communications and/or issues management initiatives using a proactive, timely and responsive approach utilizing autonomous critical decision making to develop solutions to issues and manage reputational risk as needed.
  • Publish content and oversee CTN’s digital presence and accounts through newsletters, website, social media channels, etc. including content development, administration and engagement activities on all channels as appropriate/as assigned
  • Support effective communications to execute and promote organizational and network events and meetings
  • Provide communications leadership, advice, counsel and recommendations on key topics and organizational priorities/projects across all CTN departments while demonstrating a high degree of tact, confidentiality and an ability to adapt approaches, when necessary, in a fast-paced environment where the work is diversified.
  • Leads the development of senior executive and board materials on key strategic topics, issues and potential issues

Communication Processes and Practices

  • Conduct and analyze communication related data, best practices, principles; develop plans and recommend appropriate communication approaches to the manager and/or senior leadership
  • Provide ongoing administration, content and input to a communication calendar and team practices
  • Identify, research and recommend new technology, emerging communication trends and media opportunities including social media
  • Support communication related reporting needs (e.g., key performance indicators, monitoring and measurement activities, etc.)
  • Maintain and share awareness of news, current events and sectoral activities
  • Support branding consistency across CTN
  • Provide timely and responsive communications support and meet deadlines
  • Participate in external councils, committees and working groups as required
  • Champion communication best practices and trends to improve CTN communications as appropriate
  • Contribute to capacity building by sharing communication expertise, best practices and emerging trends with CTN staff as appropriate
  • Develop and maintain ongoing media/social media monitoring and responses
  • Identify and alert CTN communications and leadership team about potential crisis situations, reputational risk issues or issues management concerns as they arise and provide a recommended approach/solution, including autonomous critical decision making to address the situation and manage reputational risk as warranted
  • Contribute to communication policies, processes, crisis communication plan and practices

Content Development

  • Navigate appropriate review and approvals for content
  • Use data, strategy and best practices to inform the creation of appropriate content while anticipating potential reputational risk for the organization
  • Navigate complex information to develop appropriate and engaging content with a focus on the primary audience
  • Copywrite and edit communications content as assigned
  • Produce communications content for newsletters, website, social media channels and other key projects and priorities that impact the organization and the network
  • Produce modern and engaging communication products
  • Develop and write key messages for all communication materials in all media formats (e.g., print, web, digital, social media, presentations, videos, briefing notes, speaking notes, etc.)

Other Duties

  • Provide coverage for other members of the team as requested
  • Provide coverage as assigned to manage the communication team in absence of the manager
  • Work closely with manager to navigate competing priorities and deadlines
  • Actively foster a culture aligned with CTN’s strategic plan and core values of inclusion, innovation, agility and shared responsibility
  • Undertake other tasks as assigned by the manager and relevant to the position
  • Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of themselves and other workers at CTN; and reports situations related to health and safety to the supervisor
  • Take every reasonable precaution in the circumstances for the protection of clients at CTN when made aware of the existence of any potential danger to client safety

What We Need:

  • A minimum of three-year College level diploma in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field is required
  • A minimum of three years of corporate communications experience in fast-paced, dynamic and demanding environments is required
  • High level of business and political acumen
  • Demonstrated experience in working through extremely confidential, sensitive topics/projects with a high level of tact and professionalism
  • Experience dealing with senior leaders, government officials
  • Exceptional level of attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently apply critical thinking skills in deadline-driven environment
  • Exceptional critical/strategic thinking and risk management skills with demonstrated ability to make key decisions and recommendations independently
  • Strong interpersonal, writing, editing and presenting skills
  • Good research, analysis and related skills that supports effective communication, content development and applications, and other communications technologies
  • Familiarity with MS Office and digital media, including social media
  • Graphic design experience and skills are an asset
  • Confidence and experience in making connections across public and private sector organizations
  • Experience/familiarity with publicly funded social services, community, disability support or healthcare sectors an asset
  • Familiarity with network models of operations an asset
  • Ability to work flexible hours that may fall outside of the typical work hour framework
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and accurately in the presence of frequent interruptions and requests for assistance
  • Knowledge of the children’s service systems in Simcoe County and York Region considered an asset
  • Ability to communicate in French or other languages considered an asset
  • Experience with and understanding of various cultures and cultural communities including Francophone, First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) communities considered an asset
  • Certified First Aid considered an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to a safe environment for staff, clients and families by working in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and related policies

Selected Successful Candidate Will Be Required To:

  • Produce a clear police record check with a vulnerable sector check prior to start of employment
  • Be able to travel to assigned office, between CTN sites and/or other locations as required
  • Maintain the ability to work effectively in a temporary remote environment and have access to appropriate internet capacity
