The Plant and Animal Health Branch supports the sustainability of animal and plant agriculture, while serving to protect the well-being of the people of the province through surveillance, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and the development of strategies to mitigate identified risks. The Plant and Animal Health Branch consists of three key programs: The Animal Health Centre, the Livestock Health Management and Regulatory Unit, and the Plant Health Unit.

Together, those three areas allow the Branch to diagnose, monitor, and assist in controlling and preventing plant and animal pests and disease in British Columbia. The Branch also supports the province’s adoption of innovative, sustainable management technologies and practices that support improved quality, consumer confidence, and global competitiveness.

As senior animal health officer for the Province the position is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of policies, strategy and programs to prevent, control and mitigate for all reportable and notifiable diseases in the livestock, poultry and aquaculture industries in British Columbia.

As the Manager of the Livestock Health Management and Regulatory Unit is responsible for the strategic leadership and day to day management of the unit including oversight of multiple Acts and their regulations. The position oversees the Public Health Veterinarian, the Veterinary Epidemiologist, the Dairy Inspectors, the Compliance, Operations and Data Officer, the Canadian Agriculture Partnership (CAP) Biosecurity and Animal Welfare Project and the Provincial Apiculturist.

The position will provide oversight to all aspects of the Dairy program and take a lead role in livestock animal welfare issues in the province as required. These two roles will require developing strong partnerships with both the BC SPCA and the BC Milk Marketing Board.
