As Vice-President, International, you will build on this success and ensure that the University’s strengths, vision, presence and impact are recognized internationally. Reporting directly to the President, and supporting colleagues from across U of T’s three campuses in the Greater Toronto Area and around the world, you oversee a bold and comprehensive internationalization strategy that enhances U of T’s global reputation, attracts the world’s best and brightest, engages and leverages the deep expertise of its scholars and staff, and develops students and scholars as engaged and impactful global citizens.
To this end, you work collaboratively with U of T’s tri-campus community, including its Deans, Principals and Vice-Presidents as well as academic, government and industry partners. You are guided by an overarching international framework that aligns with the University’s strategic priorities and supports academic divisions in advancing their priorities. A local and global ambassador for U of T, you provide direction on a range of issues that include student and faculty recruitment, international research and innovation alliances, joint teaching and other forms of academic cooperation, international experience for students, alumni relations, and communications and branding. You also lead and support efforts to build partnerships with both the world’s most renowned universities and emerging institutions in the Global South.
At no other moment in history has U of T’s international role been more critical. While the pandemic has brought deep loss to communities around the world, it has only strengthened U of T’s resolve to address one of the biggest health and societal challenges facing the planet in over 100 years. With courage and compassion, U of T scholars, leaders and teams, together with local and international partners, have moved into high gear to add to the world’s understanding of and recovery from this crisis. As Vice-President, International, you will play a key role in enabling this work to continue into the future.
As the ideal candidate, you are an inspiring leader, skilled administrator and established scholar with credentials appropriate for a tenured faculty member. You have experience effectively navigating complex, decentralized academic environments with diplomacy and tact. You have a reputation for integrity, sensitivity to cultural diversity, openness, decisiveness and sound judgment. Collaborative and collegial, you are an exceptional communicator, reliable partner, and strategic thinker. You have finely honed relationship-building skills, with the confidence and ability to represent U of T to local and international audiences that include government officials, diplomats, corporate leaders, benefactors, alumni, and members of the wider community.
Toronto is Canada’s largest city and a world leader in such areas as business, finance, technology, healthcare, entertainment and culture. Throughout the year, the city welcomes the world and celebrates the richness of its diversity through its many festivals, including Toronto Caribbean Carnival, Pride Toronto, Hot Docs International Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and Luminato Festival Toronto, to name a few.
