2013 Young Performers Showcase The Future of Folk
June 26, 2013
WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada – The Winnipeg Folk Festival is proud to present the Galaxie Young Performers Program. Now in its 14th year, the program has seen hundreds of youths between ages 14 and 24 develop their musical talents through this mentorship and performance opportunity.
This year’s group of 41 performers were hand-selected by a jury of industry professionals to work their songs with mentors Jason Collett; Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet of Whitehorse; and Allison De Groot and Vanessa Kuzina of Oh My Darling. They will spend Thursday, July 11, at the First Unitarian Universalist Church working on their music with the mentors, then take the stage and perform at Shady Grove on Friday, July 12, from 11:00 AM to 5:30 PM.
Past participants of the Galaxie Young Performers Program have gone on to take their music to new levels. In 2013, the Festival is pleased to welcome the following program alumni as part of the main Winnipeg Folk Festival line-up:
• Del Barber: 2008
• Vanessa Kuzina of Oh My Darling: 2005
• TJ Blair of the Magnificent 7’s: 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006
This is Galaxie’s fourth year as a presenting partner for the Young Performers Program. Their involvement reflects a strong commitment to supporting emerging musicians. As a result of Galaxie’s support, all Canadian artists selected for the program have received bursaries. Galaxie is a music network that offers 100 channels of commercial-free music on TV, mobile and online to subscribers across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean.
