The Chiefs and community members of the New Post and Wahgoshig First Nations began a hunger strike yesterday to protest the actions of Abitibi Consolidated Inc.

The First Nations claim that Abitibi Consolidated Inc. is logging on traditional and sacred grounds in Eades, Hospital Point and Tomlinson.

Abitibi is planning to clear-cut 10,000 hectares of land over the next five years.

“The company’s actions are going to starve our peoples. The hunger strike is symbolic of the consequences of Abitibi’s actions,” said New Post Chief Roseanne Archibald. “If they keep clear-cutting huge tracts of land our people will starve because the land will no longer provide for us.”
