A Special Statement from the Métis Nation of Ontario on Appointment of New Crown-Indigenous Relations and Indigenous Services Ministers

With the swearing in of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new cabinet, the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) congratulates the newly sworn in federal cabinet, and specifically the Honourable Mandy Gull-Masty on her appointment as Minister of Indigenous Services and the Honourable Rebecca Alty as Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations. As the democratically elected, federally and provincially recognized government of Métis citizens and communities in Ontario, the MNO is committed to work alongside Minister Gull-Masty and Minister Alty for the betterment of Métis citizens and communities in Ontario.

The MNO remains committed to working with Minister Gull-Masty and Minister Alty and the Carney government in the spirit of respect, recognition, and reconciliation. In this spirt, the MNO reiterates our calls on the Carney government to prioritize:

  • Advancing Canada’s government-to-government relationship with the MNO through the continued implementation of the 2019 and 2023 Métis Self-Government Agreements;
  • Creation of a federal Métis claims process through which Métis communities from Ontario-westward can seek reconciliation and redress for outstanding Métis claims against the Crown;
  • Improve access to culturally relevant health care, addictions treatment, and mental health services for Métis citizens;
  • Expand investment in housing, education, infrastructure, and economic development to ensure Métis families and communities can thrive; and
  • Commit to the meaningful co-development and co-design of federal policy and programs that affect Métis people —ensuring Métis-specific solutions rather than one-size-fits-all approaches.

For generations, Métis communities in Ontario have enriched the cultural and economic landscape of Canada, embodying a legacy of resilience, self-determination, and nation-building. The advent of Prime Minister Carney’s cabinet is not only a chance to honour this legacy but build on the many contributions of Métis people. The MNO looks forward to renewing and advancing our shared work to build a stronger, more equitable and prosperous future—government to government—for Métis citizens and their communities across Ontario.
