Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak confirms that the organization has secured a commitment from the federal government to provide $47.8 billion in funding over 10 years for child-welfare reform. The funding is part of a settlement agreement for First Nations children and families over underfunding of on-reserve child-welfare services.

The news conference takes place on the final day of the AFN’s 45th annual general assembly in Montreal. Chief Woodhouse Nepinak is joined by Ontario Regional Chief Abram Benedict, Grand Chief Joel Abram from the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians, Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, and Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu.
