Anngutivik – Second Term Report 2007/2008
Message from the President
This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Kativik School Board. I have been with the Board almost the whole time in different capacities, and I am very proud of all the accomplishments that have been made throughout the years: From small school buildings to large schools, from no legally-qualified Inuit teachers to over 100 to date, from no Inuktitut teaching materials to an abundant amount. And to add to that, we did not have resources such as Inuit administrators, Special Education teachers, Teacher Training counsellors or student counsellors. The Inuit teachers who pioneered in developing Inuktitut teaching materials, in developing Inuktitut Teacher Training programs with McGill University, and of course delivering these courses in Inuktitut so that our Language and Culture could be kept alive, deserve a worthwhile mention. We can’t thank them enough for all the countless hours, evenings and weekends they committed to their work so that our children can be taught in Inuktitut. And of course our accomplishments would not have been as great without the Qallunaat who have been there for us all these years. Thank you very much to all.
Once again we are completing the school year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who worked hard this year to pass their grades, and who despite the fact that waking up in the morning is hard, attended school regularly. I also thank every member of the Kativik School Board staff who worked hard to ensure schools ran smoothly. I would also like to congratulate everyone who will have graduated from their studies by the time this magazine comes out – Kindergarten students going on to Grade 1; Grade 7 students going on to the Secondary level; students graduating from Secondary 5; Post-Secondary students graduating from colleges and universities; Adult Education students graduating from general and vocational training; and finally teachers who will be receiving their teaching diploma this summer. Good job!
To those who have yet to complete their studies, keep up the good work. And to those who dropped out this year, the next school year is an opportunity to start over. Learning has no ending, and Education can take you to wherever you want to be in the future.
Nakurmiimarialuk Iluunasi,
Alicie Nalukturuk
