The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is announcing the second year of funding for Northwest Territories (NWT) students working towards improving the suitability, accessibility, and affordability of housing in the territory.

Twelve memorial scholarships of $1,000 each are available to NWT students pursuing careers ranging from construction and carpentry to business administration, project management, communications, finance and healthcare.

Jada Beck received an Alfred Moses Scholarship in 2023. The Hay River resident is now a second-year medical student at Queen’s University.

“As an Indigenous woman and future physician, I recognize that the housing crisis in the NWT poses a significant challenge to the health and well-being of our community members,” Beck says.

“I intend to raise awareness about the importance of housing stability as a social determinant of health while actively contributing to policy discussions to ensure the needs and voices of Indigenous communities are considered.”

There are two categories of scholarships.

  • The Alfred Moses Memorial Scholarship is for students in their first year of post-secondary study, either after high school or as a mature student.
  • The Tom Williams Memorial Scholarship is for students who are in their second year or later of their program.

The late Honorable Alfred Moses was the Minister Responsible for the NWT Housing Corporation from 2018-2019.

Tom Williams was the president of Housing NWT, formerly the NWT Housing Corporation, from 2016-2021.

Both public servants were known for their commitment to addressing housing issues, and for their support of northern youth.

Students from each of the Housing NWT districts (Beaufort-Delta, Nahendeh, North Slave, Sahtu, South Slave), including two in Yellowknife, are encouraged to apply.  Applicants must write a short essay linking how their program relates to advancing housing support for the people the most in need in the territory.

Applications can be found on www.housingnwt.ca and will be accepted until June 6, 2024.
