As Hudson’s Bay issues a farewell message to Canadians, Indigenous leaders issue a call for transparency amid the looming artifact auction.

Indigenous groups are calling for transparency after an Ontario judge granted Hudson’s Bay the right to auction off an estimated 1,700 pieces of art and 2,700 artifacts during the ongoing liquidation of the 355-year-old company.

As Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) prepares to auction off historic artifacts, including its 1670 Royal Charter signed by King Charles II, the Indigenous Council of the Canadian Museums Association (CMA) has sent a letter to HBC asking the insolvent retailer to consider how its operations were intrinsically linked to Indigenous communities.
