BCAFN congratulates new Chancellor, Dr. Judith Sayers, on appointment at Vancouver Island University
(Lheidli T’enneh Territory – June 17, 2021) – BC Assembly of First Nations (BCAFN) congratulates Kekinusuqs, Dr. Judith Sayers on her appointment as Vancouver Island University’s (VIU) newest chancellor today during a virtual ceremony. Dr. Sayers is president of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council and former elected Chief (14 years) of Hupacasath First Nation as well as an educator, working as an adjunct with both the School of Business and Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria.
“I am pleased to congratulate Dr. Judith Sayers and VIU on this new appointment and I know together they will do good work to ensure that First Nations students thrive and are successful in fulfilling their goals and dreams,” stated Regional Chief Terry Teegee. “I encourage VIU to embrace Dr. Sayers’ innovative and extensive thought and knowledge and fully integrate First Nations’ education ideologies and research methodologies into their institution.
Dr. Sayers additional accomplishments include a long history of passionate advocacy for First Nations rights and title and sustainable development. In 2019 she became a member of the Order of Canada, an honour for people who make extraordinary contributions to the nation. Dr. Sayer holds a business and law degree, as well as an honourary Doctor of Laws from Queen’s University.
