Biodiversity Day 2022 – Minister Goodon represents Red River Métis at UN OEWG Biodiversity Meeting
May 22, 2022
Winnipeg, MB, in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis - The Manitoba Métis Federation (MMF), the National Government of the Red River Métis, also known as the Manitoba Métis, would like to acknowledge that today, May 22, 2022, is Biodiversity Day. The slogan for 2022 is “Building a shared future for all life”. Conservation and protection of biodiversity is a key priority of the MMF in Canada and beyond borders. Will Goodon, MMF Minister of Housing and Property Management, and member of the Indigenous Circle of Experts, is representing the Red River Métis at the upcoming UN Open-Ended Working Group biodiversity meeting in Kenya.
The one-week meeting is set from June 21 – 26 in Nairobi and represents the final opportunity to strengthen the UN’s ten-year plan to address biodiversity loss, called the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, prior to its adoption later in the year at COP 15 in Kunming, China. The Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework represents an opportunity to improve our relationship with nature and the Red River Métis are a core part of that relationship.
“The MMF is focused on ensuring that the rights of the Red River Métis are respected, and that Indigenous knowledge is a central element of the conversation process,” said Minister Goodon, “The Red River Métis must be able to fully and effectively participate in decision-making related to biodiversity and conservation.”
The MMF continues to take concrete steps to protect and preserve natural resources, climate, and wildlife across the Métis Nation Homeland. We have an enormous responsibility as stewards of the lands, water, and air within our traditional territories. Countries across the world are about to set global standards respecting conservation and the MMF will be at the table to make sure our views are reflected in the plan.
