HALIFAX – Unionized cleaning staff at a federal research facility are calling on Ottawa to protect their jobs.
The Service Employees International Union Local 2 says the National Research Council in Halifax is replacing the cleaning positions in favour of a non-union contractor.
The union is planning to protest the cuts at a rally outside the office today at noon.
It says it asked the council to require the new contractor to hire the current employees and recognize their collective agreement.
But the union says the council claims it can’t dictate who the contractor hires.
The labour group says the federal government has promised to help create good jobs and should step in to save the unionized positions.
