HALIFAX – A Nova Scotia aboriginal band is drafting plans to rebuild a community on the site of a Mi’kmaq village obliterated by the Halifax Explosion nearly a century ago.

Black-and-white photos taken at the turn of the last century show a collection of wigwams close to the shoreline at the narrowest part of Halifax harbour.

The Mi’kmaq called it Turtle Grove.

The Millbrook First Nation wants to build a mix of residential and commercial properties on the 3.9-hectare site.

But Chief Bob Gloade says the band needs more land to make the project work.

He says talks with the Canada Lands Company are moving slowly.

Gloade says that’s because the Crown agency is moving ahead with plans to develop the adjacent former military housing complex known as Shannon Park.

Canada Lands spokesman Chris Millier says he doesn’t expect any land at Shannon Park to be put up for sale until 2018 or 2019.
