Canadian Civil Liberties Association announced that Verna George has joined as special advisor on Indigenous affairs, effective Oct. 28. Called to the Ontario bar in 2007, George has articled for the Community Legal Clinic of Niagara South and has served as director of negotiations for the Chippewas of Kettle & Stony Point First Nation. In this position, she oversaw land claims and negotiation files, organized community ratification votes and member consultations and worked with all levels of government to ensure that the First Nation’s principles and traditions were respected.
George is Haudenosaunee from the Six Nations of the Grand River. She is Mohawk, a member of the Turtle Clan and a long-time resident of the Kettle & Stony Point First Nation in Southern Ontario.
