Canadians must learn about residential schools – Sault Star

The tragic discovery of the remains of 215 children at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia has left Canadians from coast-to-coast to coast in shock.

Tk’emlups te Securepem First Nation hired specialists to conduct ground-penetrating radar to search the grounds of this decommissioned residential school, run by the Catholic church from 1890 to 1969.

These undocumented deaths may prove to be just the tip of the iceberg as more First Nation communities are encouraged to begin similar searches. The elders of the First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples, many of whom are or were residential school survivors, have told stories through the generations about the children in these institutions who disappeared on a regular basis never to return.

They told about the physical and sexual abuse, neglect and starvation by the priests and nuns in these schools. As for the ones who were too damaged to recall and tell about the horrors they endured and survived; these souls lived lives full of pain and loss of self.
