OTTAWA—Indigenous and Northern Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett set expectations high when she shared what will be one of her guiding principles for her time heading up the newly renamed department.
“One of the best pieces of advice was: ‘Consider yourself the minister of reconciliation,’ ” Bennett told reporters outside the House of Commons Wednesday following the first meeting of the newly sworn-in cabinet appointed by Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The Liberal government has promised to overhaul the relationship between the federal government and First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples — a monumental task that goes beyond changing the tone employed by the former Conservative government.
