SYDNEY — Cape Breton Regional Municipality council has approved agreements reached through consultation with the local aboriginal community intended to move forward port development in Sydney harbour.
Council voted in favour of the agreements during its regular monthly meeting Tuesday evening, but some members expressed concern about being asked to do so before the final phase of the negotiations even begins.
“This element … will allow us to go forward with the confidence we need to to market the greenfield site,” Mayor Cecil Clarke said. “What we have to do is then deal with Transport Canada — it doesn’t mean the process ends, but it allows us to move forward.”
