Child advocate axed, duties aligned with ombudsman – Daily Miner and News

The province plans to eliminate the Office of the Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth according to legislation tabled in its Fall Economic Statement — the move brought sweeping criticism from different groups across the province and northwestern Ontario when it was announced Nov. 16.

The advocate independently investigates mistreatment of youth, particularly those in child welfare, and reviews government policy that affects children, as well as doing outreach work to empower kids. Children are also able to directly call the advocate.

The province intends to roll the duties of the advocate into the Office of the Ontario Ombudsman, another independent watchdog. It also intends to roll the duties of the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario and the French Language Services Commissioner into the Ontario Ombudsman office.
