City counts down to Congress 2018: Canada’s largest academic conference, May 26 – June 1, 2018
The countdown is underway to the largest conference ever to be held in Regina: the 2018 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences from May 26 to June 1, which will attract up to 7,000 delegates from across Canada and around the world.
“The Congress is an incredible opportunity to showcase our growing and vibrant city to people from all over the country. The biggest convention in the city’s history, it also represents an estimated $8 million in economic activity coming to Regina,” Mayor Michael Fougere said at the campus kickoff event, held today at the University of Regina. Faculty, staff, students, and community partners were on hand to get a sneak peek at Congress 2018 programming, including events that will be free and open to the community.
The theme, Gathering diversities, reflects the fact that we are all, together, treaty people. Researchers, policy makers, and graduate students will be attending. Sixty-eight scholarly associations will hold their annual conference during Congress. Many U of R scholars and researchers will be attending and presenting. Congress will also features Canada’s largest academic expo and career corner.
“We are thrilled to be hosting the 87th annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. It’s an incredible opportunity to showcase our campus and the life-changing work that goes on here,” said Congress 2018 Academic Convenor Dr. André Magnan.
“Along with the Community Connections programming, the University has created Cultural Connections programming for Congress, building on the theme Gathering diversities, which will showcases our strengths in the arts, technology, music, theatre, film, and visual arts,” said U of R President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vianne Timmons.
The Community and Cultural Connection events will be open to the public and free of charge, including Queering the Queen City audio walking tour, a creative writing exhibition, a tour of community-based research projects, and more.
In addition, U of R alumnus and Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde will be a guest, and legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie – a recipient of an honorary degree from the U of R – will perform a special concert as part of Congress 2018.
Today’s Campus Countdown to Congress 2018 event included insider details about Congress 2018. There was a call for the 500 volunteers it will take to host up to 7,000 delegates from across Canada and around the world. Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas and will be key to extending the warmest of prairie welcomes to our visitors.
