City of Iqaluit: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – Scheduled closure for trucked-services and city offices

The City of Iqaluit acknowledges the massive impact the residential school system has had on Iqalummiut and supports the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation –action #80 in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) report. Residents and city staff are encouraged to take time to reflect and participate in the community events for this day.

Statement from Mayor Bell

“The Residential Schools have left a profound and long-lasting traumatic impact on many Iqalummiut. The community continues to see and feel the pain and injustices carried out through the Residential School system, as individuals and families face the long-lasting impact of intergenerational trauma. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day for us to recognize that history and the legacy of residential schools as it pertains to the progression of reconciliation for Inuit and other Indigenous communities, to ensure that they are honoured and supported through this journey.”

In recognition of The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the City would like to advise residents that City offices and arenas will be closed to the public and trucked services will not run on:

• Friday, September 30, 2022

The Aquatic Center will be open from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Please be advised of the following alternate schedule for trucked-services:

Water and Sewer Truck services
• Thursday, September 29, 2022 – 6:00 am until finished
• Friday, September 30, 2022 – No trucked services

Residential Garbage service
• Thursday, September 29, 2022 – 6:00 am until finished
•  Friday, September 30, 2022 – No trucked services

Residents requesting water delivery may call the City’s dispatch service at 867-979-5650, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A service charge of $350 is applied for emergency residential delivery and $500 is applied for emergency commercial delivery.

Please note that the National Indian Residential School Survivor Support Line provides support for former students and those affected. Access emotional and crisis referral services by calling the 24-hour national crisis line at 1-866-925-4419.
