“We want more dreamers. We want our youth to have the best opportunity as any youth should.”
With more than 100 of its children currently in care across the country, Cowessess First Nation is creating a new youth transition home to give 10 teenage girls a renewed sense of home and stability within the community.
Cowessess First Nation Chief Cadmus Delorme sees this home as a part of the reconciliation process.
“None of us today created residential schools, the Indian Act, but we all inherited the aftermath. And these children, we want them to be dreamers, we don’t want them to be survivors, because when you’re in care, sometimes survival is all you have,” he said.
