Crisis in Attawapiskat Fuels Local First Nations Man to Take Action

Calgary, Alberta, December 1, 2011…Inspired by recent events in the James Bay, local Calgarian and First Nation member, Terry Metatawabin is seeking to help his people of Northern Ontario. Attawapiskat First Nation has become a “black eye” for all Canadians to witness the horrible and dreadful living conditions that the band members live in.

“Being from a neighbouring community in the region, I have witnessed firsthand what our communities face on a day to day basis. Attawapiskat First Nation has extreme challenges with adequate shelter for their members. It makes me very sad to see these elders, children and distant family members suffering with deplorable living conditions,” said Terry Metatawabin.The resident of Calgary is making it a mission to take action to assist the members of Attawapiskat First Nation. The Cree man is looking for support in his efforts to coordinate collections of “Christmas Shoeboxes” for the community of Attawapiskat First Nation. The Christmas shoeboxes can include toys, winter clothing and Christmas gifts for children, youth, parents and elders. The gifts should be wrapped and labeled to the appropriate age group.

“In the spirit of giving, the Christmas shoe boxes will be a warm welcome of hope for many impoverished people of Attawapiskat First Nation. At this time of year, some people look at donating or sponsoring the needy, we have needs right here in our own back yard in Canada and I believe that this is definitely a cause we need to come together as Canadians. I want to thank those that have already donated and know that their generosity will put a BIG smile on the children & community members of Attawapiskat,” concluded Mr. Metatawabin.

We are currently seeking assistance to offset the costs of shipping & handling of the Christmas Shoe Boxes.
