Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault discusses govt’s plans for to amend Impact Assessment Act

On Parliament Hill, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault outlines interim guidance for the Impact Assessment Act while the federal government makes the necessary legislative amendments to bring it into constitutional compliance. As part of this process, the federal government is examining all of the projects currently being assessed under the Act to ensure there is clear federal jurisdiction in all cases. In ruling on October 13, the Supreme Court of Canada found that the law – enacted in 2019 to overhaul the environmental assessment process for resource and industrial projects – exceeded federal jurisdiction and was largely unconstitutional.
