In a news conference on Parliament Hill, Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller provides an update on the federal government’s response to COVID-19 (coronavirus disease), focusing on the pandemic’s impact on Indigenous communities in Canada. He is joined by Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett as well as Valerie Gideon (the senior assistant deputy minister for the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Indigenous Services Canada) and Dr. Tom Wong (the chief medical officer of public health for Indigenous Services Canada). The ministers are asked about the Kashechewan First Nation in northern Ontario as it copes with an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak. They also face questions about Canada Day, now that a number of cities and municipalities across the country are moving to cancel upcoming festivities in light of the discovery in Kamloops. The buried remains of 215 children were found at the former site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia.
