First Nations University land receives reserve status – 620

Canada’s first urban reserve negotiated for educational purposes is in Regina.

The land upon which First Nations University is located on, totaling just over 32 acres in size received reserve status Wednesday..

“I see the joy on their (peoples) face when we did the ceremony, I felt so much,” said Chief Michael Starr of the Star Blanket Cree Nation. “It felt accomplished.”

The agreement, signed by the several parties including the federal and provincial governments, had it’s process initiated back in 2002, when the First Nation was selected in the Urban Reserve creation process. For Starr, he’s hopeful this could lead to economic opportunities for student benefits.
