Tsartlip First Nation elder Carl Olsen pulled a small, worn letter from his pocket Wednesday on the lawn of the legislature and read it aloud.
It was from a student at a North Saanich elementary school. It said: “Kill the stream, you kill the salmon. Then you kill the orcas.”
For the 77-year-old, it’s a reminder of why he has stood on the shoulder of the Malahat once a week for the past two years and 10 months — through rain and snow — protesting the province’s plan to realign the highway through Goldstream Provincial Park.
