When Therese Tuccaro Secondary School opened in 2020, no one in Fort Chipewyan had graduated in more than two years.
An Indigenous-run school in Fort Chipewyan has produced 124 high school graduates since opening in 2020, ending plunging graduation rates that shocked community leaders.
Therese Tuccaro Secondary School, which offers Grade 8 to 12 classes for students of all ages, has exceeded the community’s expectations as Kerri Ceretzke, the school’s principal and education for the Mikisew Cree First Nation (MCFN), declares the project a success.
When the school opened as Fort Chipewyan Community High School in 2020, no one had graduated from the Athabasca Delta Community School (ADCS), the community’s other K-12 school, in more than two years.
