Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey VI
The annual Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey Forum attracts Chiefs, health leaders, front-line health workers, federal and provincial partners, and other key decision makers in BC First Nations health. The unique conference is the only one of its kind in Canada and in its sixth year of operation, the 2013 forum promises to be bigger and better than ever with over 1000 delegates expected to attend.
Since inception, Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey forums have set the stage for a one-of-a-kind dialogue – one in which BC First Nations provide wisdom for building and transforming a more effective health system from the ground up. This year, we will achieve a historic milestone as operations of the First Nations and Inuit Health BC Region of Health Canada will be transferred to the FNHA.
In recognition of this milestone, we invite you to participate in the Honouring our Shared Journey: Commemorating the Transfer Ceremony during the opening of Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey VI on October 22, 2013. The opening commemoration ceremony is an opportunity to reflect on our collective achievement and honour our continued journey. The ceremony is also an occasion to participate in the opening procession, share your songs and stories, and for each region to put forward two witnesses to speak to the plenary audience about the meaning of our journey – remember to bring your regalia and drums to celebrate.
As we prepare for transfer, we are beginning to envision how the existing health system can be transformed to support First Nations philosophies of a holistic wellness system. At this year’s Forum come out and learn how BC First Nations are influencing the broader provincial health system; define what it means for the FNHA to be Your Health and Wellness Partner; and explore other opportunities for collaboration, partnership and sustainability. This year, Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey will include interactive breakout sessions, collaboration with other BC First Nations leaders and health professionals, the return of last year’s celebrated Health Fair and Trade Show, and much more.
Over 70 Exhibitors, BC First Nations Artisans, and our annual Health Screening for forum attendees will be in the health fair and trade show, along with the Health Passport program that includes your chance to win amazing prizes!
Breakout sessions will include an opportunity for communities to share their best practices, and hear about new initiatives and innovative approaches in areas such as health and wellness planning, traditional wellness and medicine, harm reduction and intervention strategies, human resources and capacity development, recruitment and retention strategies, data and information management, and cultural competency.
Other highlights will include the announcement and celebration of the First Nations Health Council’s first ever leadership wellness challenge: Beefy Chiefs & Champions Wellness Challenge, and the winner of our Video Contest: Inspiration Nation. The event wouldn’t be a success without the attendance of our BC First Nations Chiefs and Health Leads – join us at Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey VI and help shape the future of First Nations health in BC.
Gathering Wisdom for a Shared Journey VI takes place on October 22-24, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in beautiful Coast Salish territory. Don’t miss out, register today!
