ST. JOHN’S, N.L. _ Former Newfoundland premier Paul Davis is reminding the province that prior to winning the November election, the province’s Liberals had said that raising the harmonized sales tax would be a “job killer.”
The Tory Opposition leader says it appears Liberal Premier Dwight Ball is preparing to break a key campaign pledge as his finance minister has said raising the tax has not been ruled out.
Davis says the Liberals are only now coming to realize the sad state of the province’s fiscal situation amid plunging oil prices.
He says the previous Conservative government _ under his leadership _ knew that increasing the H.S.T. was necessary, but Ball decided to roll back that measure last month, as he promised prior to the election.
