The Government of the Northwest Territoires (GNWT) has announced that three communities will get funding for Coordinators who will be responsible for working on key tourism projects.

This is part of the Community Tourism Coordinator Program — an initiative of the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment designed to help communities hire and maintain individuals to develop sustainable and marketable tourism products.

The communities selected for this intake are:

  • Tuktoyaktuk
  • Liidlii Kué (Fort Simpson)
  • Hay River

These communities were selected on an application based process and will each receive $50,000 to go towards a dedicated staff member to do this important work.

The communities will have the ability to develop plans specific to their needs and goals.

The Community Tourism Coordinator program is an initiative of Tourism 2020 — the GNWT’s tourism investment strategy which has helped grow the sector to more than $203 million in value as of 2018.

Quote

“Tourism is an important sector for the NWT and interest in this sector continues to grow and new opportunities are opening up for our communities. This investment will help those communities develop the products they need to attract more visitors and take their share of the growing tourism industry.”

-Wally Schumann, Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment
