Government of Yukon provides update on remediation of Victoria Gold’s Eagle Gold Mine

The Government of Yukon continues to provide updates to Yukoners regarding progress on the remediation work and environmental monitoring of the Eagle Gold heap leach failure.

The court-appointed Receiver has completed significant work to improve environmental conditions on and off site and to increase the stability of the heap leach facility. This work has been completed to meet the remediation milestones and inspectors’ directions issued by the Government of Yukon and other regulatory agencies.

The primary focus of work at the site has been interception, storage and treatment of water. The Receiver has constructed water storage ponds, installed groundwater monitoring and interception wells, expanded the environmental monitoring network and treated and discharged water from site.

Biological agents are being used to help destroy cyanide as a way to improve water treatment at the mine site. The goal is to significantly reduce or eliminate cyanide levels.

The Receiver has successfully intercepted more than 350,000 cubic metres of groundwater and treated and discharged over 800,000 cubic metres of water. Water treatment and discharge will continue this fall to improve the water storage on site in advance of the 2026 spring melt.

Water quality in Haggart Creek is meeting objectives for cyanide and copper, while mercury levels are now below detection at all monitoring stations. These improvements are mainly due to the collection and storage of contaminated groundwater, which is effectively averting contaminants from reaching the creek. In areas close to the mine site, concentrations of nitrite and cobalt have decreased but remain above objectives.

The Department of Environment continues to report on water quality results, which are regularly published on yukon.ca/victoria-gold-updates.

The Receiver is using remote-controlled bulldozers to recontour the heap to improve stability and reduce the risk of another slide. To further improve stability, recirculation of water on the heap has stopped and a well has been installed to remove water from the in-heap pond.

Work continues to recover gold found within the cyanide water stored in ponds at the mine site. Technical advisors confirm this work has not impacted water treatment.

Revenue from the sale of assets, including future sales of gold, are being used to help fund ongoing work at the site and offset the cost of remediation efforts.

The Receiver is completing the final activities to meet milestones of stabilizing the site. Over the winter months the Receiver will continue to manage water and monitor conditions on and off site. The Government of Yukon will continue to work closely with the Receiver to ensure necessary actions are taken on site to maintain physical and environmental stability.
