Gov’t defends plans for North – The Chronicle Journal

The province will come up short if it limits consultation with Indigenous people on the dismantling of its Far North Act to only a few hearings, NDP MPP Sol Mamakwa told the legislature Wednesday.

“By rushing hearings and making communities travel to give evidence, many community voices will be missed,” said Mamakwa (Kiiwetinoong).

The Conservatives have vowed to scrap the act, which was brought in by the former Liberal government in 2010. It makes about half of the remote north off-limits to industrial development.
