Group of Indigenous parents disappointed in EIPS – Leduc Representative

A group of First Nations mothers are concerned about some of the practices Elk Island Public Schools is as part of its Truth and Reconciliation efforts.

Samantha Prefontaine, one of the mothers, feels local Cree protocols are being ignored.

“Overall, I have been very grateful for the Truth and Reconciliation work done by the EIPS school division. They are led by a wonderful First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) education team who has been further led by the wisdom of Elder Wilson Bearhead,” the mother said. “However, we have had some experiences with individual schools and FNMI leads that have led to us wanting to bring attention to the need for improved respect for indigenous voices in the school division.”
